Vittoria De Franchis
Curator and vocal researcher. Based between London and Rome, she is currently Curator at the Nicoletta Fiorucci Foundation where she has established a new programme of exhibitions in the London space and initiated the Nicoletta Fiorucci Foundation Prize at Frieze London. Since 2023 she runs gggglllloooossssaaaa, a worldwide programme of interdisciplinary events in apartments focusing on voice, text, sound and performance. Between 2023 and 2025, she was part of the curatorial team at CIRCA, and from 2016 to 2021 at Terraforma and Threes Productions.
Vittoria De Franchis’ proposal begins with an invitation addressed to participants on Thursday morning: to remain silent from the moment of waking up until the beginning of the activity, experiencing silence and the listening that emerges from it through an extended period of attention.
The workshop unfolds through a series of exercises proposed by De Franchis, beginning with the listening of the surrounding soundscape. Participants are invited to identify and record their own tone and its variations on paper, as if creating a musical score, relying on auditory memory and their perception of sound.
The following exercise draws inspiration from Mette Edvardsen’s performance The Time Has Fallen Asleep in the Afternoon Sunshine, in which a book memorized by heart is transmitted between performer and spectator. Similarly, working in pairs, participants are invited to share their own sound with one another, transforming individual listening into an act of exchange.
The final exercise consists of composing a new collective score by combining the different scores produced by the participants, and subsequently recording it. Each pair then chooses a space in the surrounding landscape in which to present the sound performance, creating a relationship between sound and the place that hosts it.
